This is the fourth year I’ve been using a reading journal, and once again I’ve kept quite a few of the same pages, but I’ve also added more pages than I’ve ever had before, though I’ve tried to keep most of them very simple. I wanted to fill out more space in my journal and do more to track my reading in a more personalised way.

6 Ways to Start a Story
While I may have a problem with finishing stories, I have very few issues with starting them. The excitement and motivation that comes with piecing together a plot and populating a world with people and places will always have a certain allure to me, and it is part of the reason why I’ve never really feared the blank page. For me, starting a story, novel, or any piece of writing is the easier part.
My Least Favourite Thing About Writing
Spoiler alert: it’s the editing. While I enjoy writing (most of the time), even when it gets difficult (often), I do have a least favourite part of the process of creating a fictional story. My favourite part is either the planning or writing itself, and as soon as I get to the stage in a piece where I need to look over it to figure out where I’ve gone wrong and make structural or grammatical changes, I want to run away.
Why I Struggle To Finish Writing Novels
Unfortunately, I rarely finish what I start when it comes to writing. Though the length of time it takes me to complete something is never an issue, I tend to decide it is and abandon projects when it feels like I should be done with them already. To make matters worse, I can be quite slow when it comes to writing, which means I don’t feel as though I’m making any progress and then thanks to the decision that I’m taking too long, I stop making any altogether. Whether seduced by a new story or intimidated by a current one, I can’t seem to bring my stories to their conclusion.
10 Things to Eliminate from Your Writing
Occasionally, you might wonder, ‘What should I look out for when editing my writing?’ We all need a reminder every once in a while about all the clunky words, phrases, and bad habits it would be a good idea to remove from our writing to make it clearer and more concise. I’m very close to embarking on some serious editing with one of my pieces of writing and thought it would be a great time to review the kinds of mistakes I should be looking out for.
My Reading Routine (or lack thereof)
I’m always curious about how and when people read, especially when they read a dozen or more books a month, but generally too. Do you have a set time to read? A dedicated reading nook? Does most of your reading happen on your commute? Have you often lost sleep for a good book? I want to share my answers to these questions and more in this post.
Monthly Wrap-Up – May 2023: When Tears of The Kingdom Calls
Even though I had high hopes for my reading this month, I’m unsurprised that I managed to read a measly two books. Last month, when I was hopeful, it slipped my mind that the game The Legend of Zelda: Tears on the Kingdom would be released on 12 May, and after that, my reading was practically non-existent. Rather than find a good balance between reading and gaming, I threw myself into Tears of the Kingdom to indulge in nostalgia, and I don’t regret it one bit.
How To Read Critically
Whether for personal development or studying purposes, learning how to read critically can be useful. Not only can it help you to understand a book with more depth, but it can also lead you to make more informed decisions when teasing out what you like and dislike when it comes to reading.
Should You Read Outside of Your Comfort Zone?
As a reader, finding a genre of books you can devour in one sitting is an addictive feeling and it can be tempting to never stray from your established favourites. But what happens when you begin to wonder what else is out there? What you could be missing out on?
Things to Consider Before Lending Out your Books
Have you ever been asked to lend out one of your books and been unsure about how to respond? Me too, but I’ve learned that as a reader, it’s best to be prepared for this question if it comes your way.
Many Book lovers, for good reason, refuse to lend out their books. This is usually due to either bad past experiences or personal preferences, and there is nothing wrong with making this choice. Even friends can disrespect your belongings, so it’s no surprise that most book lovers advise against trusting anyone with your precious books. Even if you think you’re okay with other people temporarily possessing your books, chances are you may still be shocked by the result.
