Mid-Year Reading Journal Update 2024

While I may be inconsistent with many of my hobbies, my reading journal has never fallen victim to being forgotten. I enjoy adding to it, putting my creativity into producing something fun to fill in but also nice to look at. I love having somewhere to track my reading, and when I consider why IContinue reading “Mid-Year Reading Journal Update 2024”

Will I Participate in NaNoWriMo in 2023?

Any excuse to write more is good enough for me, especially with some level of organisation, so of course I’m happy to get involved whenever I’m able to. Plus, the feeling of accomplishment after writing so much whether I succeed at reaching the goal or not is great. With October flying by and November looming, the thought has been nagging at me for a while. Will I be taking part this year?

6 Ways to Start a Story

While I may have a problem with finishing stories, I have very few issues with starting them. The excitement and motivation that comes with piecing together a plot and populating a world with people and places will always have a certain allure to me, and it is part of the reason why I’ve never really feared the blank page. For me, starting a story, novel, or any piece of writing is the easier part.

My Least Favourite Thing About Writing

Spoiler alert: it’s the editing. While I enjoy writing (most of the time), even when it gets difficult (often), I do have a least favourite part of the process of creating a fictional story. My favourite part is either the planning or writing itself, and as soon as I get to the stage in a piece where I need to look over it to figure out where I’ve gone wrong and make structural or grammatical changes, I want to run away.

Why I Struggle To Finish Writing Novels

Unfortunately, I rarely finish what I start when it comes to writing. Though the length of time it takes me to complete something is never an issue, I tend to decide it is and abandon projects when it feels like I should be done with them already. To make matters worse, I can be quite slow when it comes to writing, which means I don’t feel as though I’m making any progress and then thanks to the decision that I’m taking too long, I stop making any altogether. Whether seduced by a new story or intimidated by a current one, I can’t seem to bring my stories to their conclusion.

10 Things to Eliminate from Your Writing

Occasionally, you might wonder, ‘What should I look out for when editing my writing?’ We all need a reminder every once in a while about all the clunky words, phrases, and bad habits it would be a good idea to remove from our writing to make it clearer and more concise. I’m very close to embarking on some serious editing with one of my pieces of writing and thought it would be a great time to review the kinds of mistakes I should be looking out for.

6 (more) Ways to Write More

Advice is never one size fits all, so this post is a follow-up to an earlier one: 5 Ways to Write More. While the best way to write more is to do just that, having the drive to keep going, even if it’s in a haphazard, disorganised way, can be more important than the writing itself. In the hopes of helping you find something that might work for you, here are 6 more ways to write more:

5 Ways to Write More

Whether for a challenge or a personal deadline, writing more and writing quickly can be greatly beneficial. While you will obviously make more progress with your writing by working faster and writing more, you also might feel more inspired by dedicating extra time and attention to your current project and also find that by organising your time, you have more of it than you thought you did.

Are Creative Writing Challenges Ruining your Writing?

Every once in a while, writers are tempted into taking on a challenge to test themselves, to find their limits, and to have fun. But sometimes, these creative writing challenges aren’t as enjoyable as promised. By creative writing challenges, I mean using things like prompts, restrictive word counts, certain emotions, or generally having something veryContinue reading “Are Creative Writing Challenges Ruining your Writing?”

Why You Need a Reading Journal

Sometimes referred to as book journals, reading journals have quickly become my favourite way to track my reading that I’ve ever tried. When I realised that even though I could look at my shelves and see the books I had read, I could hardly remember anything about them, I decided I needed to change that.
